I call this the 30 day rule for how to quit Adderall, and it has worked wonders for SWIM over the years. A quick disclosure, the majority of this blog post is going to only apply for those users of the drug Adderall that have had serious problems with Adderall and who are taking the drug almost every single day. For the most part, these individuals are going to have the hardest time quitting Adderall, and should plan out their path to sobriety. In this blog post, I compare beating your Adderall addiction to that of winning a war, in that it employs many of the same strategies.
If you’ve ever read the history of World War II, or Niccolo Machiavelli’s “The Prince,” or “The Art of War,” By Sun Tzu, many of the strategies to win a war involve unwavering persistence and determination, taking bold risks (which in this case would be something like quitting cold turkey,) using war tactics (taking Adderall strategically, in ways such as weening off of the drug or taking it only when absolutely needed while you’re quitting,) and using technology to gain an edge on your opponent (technology in this case can be supplements like L-Tyrosine and your opponent or enemy, Adderall.) And Now To the Meat of the Post, My War Tactics for How to Quit Adderall, and How to Beat Adderall Addiction Like You’re the USA Crushing Japan in World War II
So, if you’ve ever Google searched how to quit an Adderall addiction, most of the stuff that came up was either about religion and finding the path, or accepting yourself, or realizing that you are “powerless to your addiction.” When SWIM (Someone Who Isn’t Me, for those of you that haven’t tip toed on the drug forums before,) was quitting Adderall, he actually started to believe this at first. It is meant to make you so afraid of the drug that you don’t want to go back to it anymore, which may work for some people, but to me it is putting a veil over the real issue, and manipulating the addict with phrases filled with sunshine and rainbows in order to hide the problem. Getting off of Adderall and fighting your Adderall addiction is just like a war, and the thing that worked for me, that has kept me off of this God forsaken pill for nearly ten years, has been using this mindset to attack this addiction.
I first took this mindset because during my first 30 days, I would read stuff on the internet about how we need to accept ourselves, and I talked to other addicts on Twitter while I was trying to create my first blog. They all seemed depressed, overweight, and were reciting the crap that all of the addiction schools tell them. It’s all nonsense, even people who have had problems with minor stuff like cigarettes or minor prescription drug addictions to like SSRI’s, if there is such a thing, were reciting the same crap.
So a few lapses later, and with some good old fashioned persistence, I was able to make it almost ten years, but not by lying around all day depressed, praying to the universe that my “addiction may heal itself,” or whatever the heck the 12 steps tell you. I beat it by fighting it like it was my opponent in a fight, like it was my competitor in the search engines and it was taking revenue in my business and I mercilessly crushed them into the ground, and like something I wanted I ran over, fought for it and took it.
Why Fighting your Addiction Rather than Accepting it Is the Best Way of How to Quit Adderall And Be Free From Your Addiction Once and For All!
Addiction is a very long lasting process, and takes unwavering persistence that can last years at a time, especially if you’re going to make it through PAWS and fight through the long run. The only way that I’ve found that you can truly put this addiction in the ground and beat it indefinitely, is to force it to die, and by educating yourself, using a smart strategy, and most of all, fighting it with your warrior spirit and with every breath left in your body. Don’t let luck and thoughts of fear stop you from quitting your addiction, push all the way through and meet your clean, sober self on the other side, that’s how you win the war and crush your Adderall addiction for good!
With the philosphy under way now, let’s take a look at the timeline of addiction, how long withdrawal and Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome is going to last (PAWS,) and how you can use this education to your advantage in planning out your withdrawal. Now for the addict that has been using the drug for years on end, that has been snorting the drug, or that has been taking very high dosages for several month, this is what the general timeline of withdrawal will look like. If you’ve been taking normal therepeutic dosages for awhile now, this chart should also be accurate with your situation.
Days 1 Through 30-This is going to be the acute phase of the withdrawal process, in that this is where you will have the sharpest withdrawal symptoms, depression, anxiety, weight gain, increased appetite, cravings for Adderall (they’re just about on par with cigarette cravings and they freaking suck…bad,) excessive cravings for pornography and sex (your brain’s receptors trying to compensate for the lack of dopamine,) the opposite can also happen and you can lose your sex drive quite a bit. The first 30 days are hell, just push through it and keep going on to the higher stages of the withdrawal process and one day you’ll be able to look into the mirror at your new self, a sober, happier, healthier, better man! My best advice for how to quit Adderall the right way, fight through it as much as possible, be patient, ride it out, and take it thirty days at a time, after the first thirty days, it’s up to simple will power and persistence of the mind that determines the fate of your addiction over the long-term.
Days 30 Through 90-Here’s how to beat an Adderall addiction over the long term, push on all the way through ninety days, because at this point you’re well on your way through post acute withdrawal syndrome and you’re a functional type of “Sober.” At this point, you’re feeling almost 100%, and you’re back to your old self, so all you have to do is stay clean (which shouldn’t really be too hard since you’re feeling like you did before you started the drug), and you’ll beat this thing indefinitely. Be aware that depression spells can still creep up in small waves, as well as anxiety, for up to around 9 months to 24 months, depending on how bad the addiction is. If you’re taking like 200 milligrams a day or something crazy like that, yeah it might take you 24 months to totally be back to 100% as good as new. However, if you’re using something a bit more reasonable, like 30-60 milligrams a day for a few years, you may be able to cross the 100% mark in around 3 to 6 months!
Days 90 Through 9 Months In-This is the stage where most users will cross the mark of total brain recovery, or at least as close as you’re going to get to it. If you’re taking a thereapeutic dosage of Adderall, 9 months is about the max that it’ll take before you are good as new!
9 to 24 Months Into Withdrawal-For more serious users who are learning how to quit Adderall due to years and years of readily available use and abuse in high dosages, or if you’ve been mixing other drugs on top of Adderall, this is how long it may take you to totally get to 100% of baseline.
2 Years and Beyond-2 years and beyond is the point at which you can call yourself around 100% recovered, just be sure to stay off of the drug, because with a relapse, you can easily slip back into your old habits of addiction relatively quickly.

So, here’s why I say to take Adderall addiction one step at a time just like you’re trying to win a war. If you were trying to win a war, you would need to be persistent, ruthless, resilient, and at a certain point, cruel towards your enemy. Well pretend that your enemy is Adderall, and that you are willing to do anything possible in order to educate yourself on how to quit Adderall, and of how to beat an Adderall addiction no matter the cost! There are two ways that you can do this, one has the highest success rate and the other is the most realistic, so for these reasons, I would recommend using some type of a mixture of the two, let’s have a look.
The Cold Turkey Method of How to Quit Adderall
This method basically says go balls to the wall, throw your Adderall bottle in the trash can right now, and lay in bed, shiver, cry, get depressed, and do whatever the heck it takes to get yourself through your Adderall withdrawal no matter the cost. While this is a bold and noble move, and you should absolutely strive to do this as much as possible whenever it is a weekend or a day off, or you don’t have an exam etc. it is somewhat unrealistic to just do this, especially if you have something of a very serious addiction. For instance, if you’ve been taking it for like 6 years straight at high dosages, you can’t just stop and then go into work the next day and still function, your boss is going to wonder what the heck is wrong with you, and you’re either going to have to lie your way out of it, tell your boss that you’re detoxing from a prescription amphetamine (which I would not recommend,) or risk getting fired from your job. For this reason, the tapering off method..may be the most appropriate.
The Tapering off Method of How to Quit Adderall
Now, the conventional method of tapering off of Adderall basically says that you should gradually lower your dosage as much as possible, and that as long as you don’t go back up the ladder, you’ll be fine. The problem with this is, you’re still going through withdrawal, its just not quite as bad, and aside from that, once you get down to zero, it’s not like you’re 100% good as new, you’ll just be further along the path of withdrawal, but eventually, you’re going to have to cold turkey some piece of the withdrawal anyway! It’s not as if once you stop taking that last 5 milligrams of Adderall bit, that all of a sudden your dopamine receptors are going to be up-regulated back up to 100% capacity, and in-fact nothing could be further from the truth!
For This Reason, Here is My Method of How to Quit Adderall, A Compromise Between Tapering and Cold Turkey
So, with these realistic facts in mind, here is what I did in order to get off of and completely quit Adderall Basically what you do is, on days that you have to work, or study for a test, or whatever it is that you need to do in order to maintain your job so that you can pay rent, or feed your family, or not flunk out of school, or whatever it is, take the pill in as low of a dosage as possible in order to function. What this amount is is going to vary significantly from person to person, and you’ll know what that amount is a heck of a lot better than I will. And then on your off days, the weekend, maybe the occasional Friday when it’s a slow day at the office, don’t take it at all.
Lay in bed all day eat cookies, stay in your pajamas and scary movies, every single day that you do this where you’re not taking Adderall is huge progress. The added benefit of this, is that especially if you’re supplementing something like L-Tyrosine on your days off, is that when you go back to work on Monday, your tolernance will have dropped by a good amount, so you can lower your dosage of Adderall even more, and then the following weekend do the same thing, and the again, and again, until you get to the point where your dosage of Adderall is so low that you feel silly! At that point, you’ll be almost good enough to work or study without the pill, and you’ll be able to kick your addiction once and for all! While this is by no means going to be easy, it worked great for SWIM and I honestly believe that it is your best shot at kicking your addiction to Adderall.
Why L-Tyrosine is Your Best Friend When Taking Adderall, And Why You Should Eventually Stop Taking That as Well
The way of how to quit Adderall with L-Tyrosine is interesting, in that it sort of gradually pulls you out of addiction, and pushes you into the path towards sobriety in the same way that Adderall had previously pulled you out of it, and pushed you down the path way of addiction. This is because you can only take L-Tyrosine on days off of Adderall, so the more days you take off of Adderall, the more days you take L-Tyrosine and vice versa. So for this method, the way of how to quit Adderall works in pairs, in that while you’re taking more and more L-tyrosine, and recovering your dopamine receptors, faster and faster, you’re also taking more and more days off of Adderall and are thus speeding up your recovery, rather than addiction, and that, ladies and gentlement, is in a nutshell, how to quit Adderall the right way!
Keeping Adderall Tolerance as Low as Possible While Taking the Drug to Avoid Addiction in the First Place, and How to Quit Adderall Before the Addiction Starts
The way of how to quit Adderall before it starts, is whether you’re taking the drug because you actually have ADHD or not, or whether you have an actual prescription for the drug or not, is to stop the addiction to Adderall before it begins. Always take frequent tolerance breaks from Adderall, take as many weekends off from the drug as you can, only take the dosage that the doctor prescribes you or lower, and be sure to always supplement L-Tyrosine, and eat and sleep as much as possible while you’re taking the drug.
